Constellation no. 10 - Ursa Major

Alternative title, ‘begin as you mean to end’ because this is the last of my constellations for a little while and my first was Ursa Minor (the little bear). I’m thinking of compiling my first set of constellation into a zine pretty soon which might be exciting. I like looking at my first and last constellations because hopefully you can see progress. Growth is always good.

Constellation no. 9 - Leo

This is the first zodiac sign in my constellation series. Leo is the fifth astrological sign of the zodiac, originating from the constellation of Leo. It spans the Zodiac between the 120th and 149th degree of celestial longitude. In astrology, Leo is considered to be a “masculine”, positive (extrovert) sign. It is also considered a fire sign and is one of four fixed signs ruled by the Sun.
Happy Birthday to my favourite Leo, my boyfriend Jeff.

Yvaine the Evening Star

Yvaine - The evening star from Neil Gaiman’s Stardust.
This one is a little different from the rest of my Constellations. Firstly, she’s not technically a constellation but she is a star. Secondly, she’s my first human in the series.
Neil Gaiman is my all time favourite author and I was inspired by his up and coming release of theStardust: The Gift Edition (want) which looks like its going to be beautiful. I also looked at Edmund Dulac’s illustrations as he’s one of my favorite golden age illustrators and I wanted to emulate that kind of feel in this piece.

Constellation No 7. - Cygnus (New Version)

Constellation No 7. - Cygnus (New Version)
In Greek mythology Cygnus is often associate with several distinct legendary swans. Many of which involve gods and people transforming into swan. However, I think my personal favorite is idea that Cygnus, together with other avian constellations near the summer solstic, Vultur Cadens and Aquila, may be a significant part of the origin of the myth of the Stymphalian Birds, one of The Twelve Labours of Hercules.
I wanted to post this in conjunction with the summer solstice but its already the 21st here (but only by less than a hour) so I’m going to say close enough. Enjoy!

Evolution

Pichu #172 - It is not yet skilled at storing electricity. It may send out a jolt if amused or startled.
Pikachu #025 - It lives in forests with others. It stores electricity in the pouches on its cheeks.
Raichu #026 - Its tail discharges electricity into the ground, protecting it from getting shocked.
The whole evolutionary chain just for fun.

Murkrow and Gengar

So I'm guilty of loving the whole Pokemon franchise as much as the next 90's Kid. I find myself drawn to the subtle folklore aspect within the games. The pokedex is pretty much just a field guide to that world and thats something I find intriguing. I might work on a few more of these at some point.
Gengar #094 - "To steal the life of its target, it slips into the prey's shadow and silently waits for an opportunity."
Murkrow #198 - "Feared and loathed by many, it is believed to bring misfortune to all those who see it at night"

Original Fenrir Illustration for Sale

My original illustration “The Binding of Fenrir” is now for sale in my Etsy store. This is the first piece of original art that I’ve put up for sale and It feels a little weird so I’m not sure I’ll be doing it too often. I hope this guy goes to a good home. :)

The Binding of Fenrir

In Norse mythology, Fenrir is a monstrous wolf that is foretold to kill the god Odin during the events of Ragnarök. The gods' knew of the prophecies foretelling great trouble from Fenrir and his rapid growth so they decided to bind him.The Gods had attempted to bind Fenrir twice with huge chains of metal, but Fenrir was able to break free both times. They then commissioned the dwarves to forge a chain that was impossible to break. To create a chain to achieve the impossible, the dwarves fashioned the chain out of six impossible things. This made the chain as thin as a silken ribbon, yet stronger than any iron chain.
This was just something quick and fun, as I’m struggling with a bit of an art block this week. I was reading Norse mythology recently because apparently unlike much of the country to the east of England, the Vikings of Cumbria (which is where I’m from) were Norwegians. Plus, my boyfriend also has Norse blood so thats a little bit poetic too. Anyway, norse mythology is beautiful so I hope to explore this concept further in the future at some point.

Cetus

Constellation No 6. - Cetus

The name Cetus actually means sea monster In Greek mythology, however in modern astronomy the constellation is often referred to as 'the whale'.This is the first constellation I've managed to finish since been back in England. I had a small art block when I first arrived but hopefully this is me getting over it/me finally adjusting to the change in temperature. :) As always if you wanted to check out/like my Facebook page that would be awesome. :)

Canis Major

Constellation illustration No. 5 - Canis Major, The Great Dog.  Nice facts about this constellation - Canis Major contains Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, known as the 'dog star', which is part of the asterism known as the Winter Triangle in the Northern Hemisphere, or the Summer Triangle in the Southern.
This one is a little bit different to the other constellations in the series so far because instead of using blues and red like I usually do, I played around with more greens and yellows. I also used my parents dog Summer as reference (she's a little grey lurcher with grey/blue eyes). As always I would love to know what you guys think. :)

Bird Book

Recently I mentioned that last summer I hand bound and illustrated a small book of bird folklore from around the world. I’m currently thinking about binding a few more and adding them to my Etsy shop, so I thought now would be a good time to let you guys see what the last one I bound looked like. Each book compiles seven stories from a range of different countries. Each of the illustrations incorporate a gold leaf symbol, which highlighting an integral factor from each story.

The Year of the Dragon

This is the fourth illustration in my constellation series and since it was only chinese new year a couple of days ago and this year its year of the dragon, I decided now would be a good time to add Draco to the collection. Initially I was a little bit unsure about adding mythical creatures to the series but I'm glad I caved because I think having a few throughout will hopefully add a bit of diversity to the finished book.

Forest Spirit Card.

New Forest Spirit card is now available in my Etsy store.

Further Into The Woods

On January 7th (my birthday) I went to the opening Reception of Further Into The Woods at Gallery Nucleus with my boyfriend Jeff, and our friend Danielle

The website blurb says - “Following 2008's journey Into The Woods with some of the most notable narrative artists, this new adventure has us exploring deeper into the realm of Children's Books and Graphic Novels with some of the most inspiring and distinguished illustrators in the field”.

It was so beautiful and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone that has a chance to go. My favorite artists work on show was Amélie Fléchais. I had already seen her work online before and I had started follow her blog but seeing it in person was amazing. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to visit again before it’s taken down.
